Hello everyone - my name is Lily!

Yup, just like the flower - although I probably don't quite smell like one, I'm as pretty as one, or so the volunteers here at the APS tell me!

I'm a pit bull mix, and I'm pretty young - maybe around a year or two, but no one knows for sure! I'm really glad to be here at the APS. When I first got here, I had a lot

of sores around my neck. The nice people here tell me that I was probably chained up with a rope or padlock around my neck, and it rubbed my skin very raw. That wasn't any fun at all! But I've healed up very nicely, and I'm as sweet as can be, even though I wasn't treated very well before.

I like to play, and other dogs are ok, but really all I want is a nice human or two to walk me, and play with me, and feed me, and most importantly, cuddle me! I love to snuggle and get petted gently around my ears and back! MMmmmMMm!

The volunteers here at the APS and I really get along well! I love people! I aim to please, you know ... I love to learn new tricks, and wiggle around with my toys and play with balls rolling across the floor - it's all so much fun!! I've really come out of my shell over the past few weeks here! I used to be quite shy, but not anymore - now, playtime is my favorite time!! (Except for food, of course!!)

Hello! Allow me to introduce myself - my name is Roland!

I'm a foxhound, and although I'm not entirely sure how old I am, I know that I'm an older fellow. In fact, I am one of the elder statesmen here at the Animal Protection Society of Durham!

Because I'm an older guy, I have excellent manners. I love to walk right next to you, and look up at you with my big smile all the time. I don't move too awfully fast, but I can keep up with you - for a while, anyway. Short walks, or slower paces, are best for me!

I love food treats, and giving kisses too! See?

I like other dogs, but I don't need one to be happy. If you already had an older or really calm dog, we'd probably get along just fine.

The one thing I really want is a nice, comfy, warm lap - one that I can curl up on at the end of a walk, or lean on at night while we watch tv together. Doesn't that sound nice?

Boy, this shelter business is interesting, isn't it?? I mean, there are a lot of dogs here - some of them are really big, and they make a lot of noise! But it's ok - I'm a big boy, and I can take care of myself! Especially because I love people - they're the best!! They feed me (which I love!!!) and play with me (which is great too) and take me out to use the lawn (whew!!) - I love people!

Boy, have I had it rough! I was found a while ago by a wonderful person -
when they found me, I had been outside a long, long time - I was very weak, and very very thin. But they nursed me back to health, and now I'm much better!!

I'm about a year old, and I'm a labrador! So, I've gone to Lab Rescue - but I'm still up for adoption, so don't forget about me!!

I'm finally starting to settle in here at the Animal Protection Society. I mean, don't get me wrong - the people here are great. But, I had a home, and my family had to give me up. I've been very sad. But I know it's not my fault!! So, I'm perking up a bit.

Great news - I went home!

Yup, sort of like Dolly Parton, but I don't really look much like her, and I'm not nearly as good of a singer. At least, I don't think so - maybe you'll think otherwise! You'd have to get me to speak, first - I'm a really super-quiet girl!

I'm about a year old, and I'm a pit bull mix! I'm entirely wh

ite, but I don't think I'm deaf. I mean, I turn my head and look when people walk by, and when dogs do things, but I'm so mellow that it's hard to tell whether I'm just curious or what!

I might be mellow, but I sure know how to have a good time! I love to play!! Toys are so much fun - I like to run around and pounce on things, so you could probably teach me how to fetch. (I'm not so good at that bringing things back to you thing yet.) I absolutely love walk-time with people. Best of all, though? Other dogs! Boy, they're so much fun! I absolutely perk up every time a dog walks by - I get so excited! I just want to go sniff and play and everything!

But I'm also a cuddler. I love laps, and I'm just about small enough to fit in one, too! But whatever I can get on your lap is fine - a paw, my head, part of my butt - that's fine too. As long as you scratch behind my ears and on my cheeks, I'll be your bestest friend!

I'm pretty sweet and low-key, myself. I don't know about you, but I just find it's easier to be polite and social! No sense getting all worked up about things!

I like other dogs, as long as they feel the same way that I do - manners are nice, and so is being calm and not getting stressed out. So, maybe a nice, sleepy male dog for a playmate? Would that work?

I do love people, but they have to treat me kindly - nice, gentle petting is great! I really love petting time here at the Animal Protection Society! Boy, these volunteers are nice!

Duncan - Blog Writer's Pick of the Week!

Hello! My name is Duncan!

I'm about a year old, and I'm a Plott Hound mix.

I am not entirely sure, but I'm fairly certain that I am the quietest dog to ever stay at the Animal Protection Society of Durham. It doesn't matter what's going on around me - I never make a peep.

Actually, I'm quite content just to sit in my kennel, maybe grab a bite or two of food every once in a while. You see, I'm really quite shy.

I'm super housetrained, so I hate to "go" in my kennel, but I really don't have a whole lot of interest in taking lots of walks or whatnot. I don't mind other dogs, you see, but what I'm really after? A lap. Just a lap. I love laps!

I am a champion snuggler. One of the volunteers at the APS routinely gets in my kennel with me. I can't wait for her to sit down - the minute she does, I put my front paws and head on her lap so that she'll know it's time to stroke my soft, thick fur and rub my ears. Oooh, I do love that!!

Sometimes I'll curl up next to her on my bed, and other times I just bury my face in her lap. I do love it when people take the time out to pet me! I think I get overlooked a lot because I don't jump around or bark, but that doesn't mean I'm not the best little dog in the world!

So, I might not be a very exciting, active dog, but hey, not everyone wants that - right?

Gee, I'd love to go home with someone who just needed a couch companion, someone who'd cuddle me all day long, and maybe be patient enough with me to help me keep perking up!

Hi, everyone!

My name is Alba, and I went home!

I'm around eighteen months old, and I'm an American Bulldog or pit bull mix!

Boy, I must be special - I have my own article in the paper!!

The volunteers here at the Animal Protection Society think I might be the sweetest girl we have here! I am a total cuddlebug - I love it when I get to play in the exercise pen with one of the volunteers, because then I can come over and lean up against their legs and get petted! Mmm, so nice!

I like toys, a little bit anyway, although I'm not always sure what to do with them. I do love other dogs, though - I like to sniff them through the fence, or say hi while they walk by!

Sometimes, though, if you move a bit too fast, or move around my head kind of fast, I get a little scared. I'm not sure, but I might not have been treated well in the past. I tend to duck out of the way, as though I'm afraid of getting smacked or hit with something, so you might just have to be patient with me. But that's about my only flaw!

This is my serious face. But don't worry - I am almost always smiling!!

I'm really smart though - if you have treats, I bet I'd learn lots of things really quickly! And I always have a big smile on my face!

I'm two years old, and I'm a pit bull mix!

I was very sad to come to the Animal Protection Society. My family couldn't take care of me anymore, and they had to give me up. I'm glad that at least they brought me to this nice place, where I get fed and loved, but I really want to find a forever home of my very own.

The good news, though, is that my former family treated me very well - I'm house trained, crate trained, and I even know some basic commands! I bet that if you were to try, you could train me to do even more!!

I have a lot of energy - I love to play with toys, and go on long walks or jogs, or do zoomies around the yard! It also seems that I get along well with other dogs, but I'd be happy just to have people again!

I'm a big, fluffy ball of fun! I'm about a year old, and people tell me that I'm a collie - German shepherd mix. I guess I have to believe them, but I really don't think I'm a big dog. I have a pretty sad story, but fortunately, so far it has a happy ending! I was a stray and I was starving when this nice lady found me and nursed me back to health. But then, once I was better, I had to come to the Animal Protection Society. I don't mind it here - it's better than being out in the cold and the rain, with no food - but I'd really, really like to have a family of my own.

I'm really sweet and affectionate. I'd love nothing better than to cuddle up with you on the couch and help you watch tv, or wrap myself around your feet while you cook (me) dinner. I'd even get along with a nice young male dog, if you had one already.

Hi everyone!

My name is Tilly! I'm adopted!

I know I'm a bit silly-looking - I look like I'm surprised all the time! But I'm really a sweet, wiggly, ball of energy! I'm two or three years old, and I'm a Chihuahua!

For such a little thing, I love to play! I love to chase a ball, and run around the exercise pen. I also have a big girl's personality trapped in this tiny body - I love to talk to the other dogs and try to play, even if they're forty times my size!

In fact, yesterday I was in the exercise pen, and other dogs would come by and say hi, and I'd put my paws up on the gate, tap them on the nose, and then sing to them! It was cute!

I love food, so I bet I could catch on to some basic manners if you took the time to train me. I'd like to go on walks, or run around the living room with a ball or squeaky toy.

A goofy name for a goofy dog! (Unless your name is Elmer, in which case it's distinguished and gentlemanly!)

I'm a Labrador-Sharpei mix, which is why I'm so wrinkly and fluffy! I'm about a year old, and I have *tons* of energy. They say here at the Animal Protection Society that I have a huge personality, and it's so true. I absolutely love to play! Play, play play plaaaaaay!

Toy time is great - I love chasing a ball around the exercise pen, and I could do that for hours! I'm really social too, and I love the chance to get to know other dogs through the gate. I'd probably like to play with a dog who could keep up with me.

I like treats too, and will gladly give you my undivided attention for a hot dog!

Basically, I need a home where the people will make sure I get worn out on a daily basis, and will give me lots of training. I'm an APS Gold Star Dog, did you know? That means that I'm such a good, well-mannered dog that I could go to just about any home. So, if you've got small kids, I just might be the dog for you!

I'm a German Shepherd mix, in case you weren't sure, and I'm just over a year old. Even though I'm young, I'm really calm, and will get along happily in any size house or apartment. Want to play? I love to play! Is it playtime yet? Awww, when will it be playtime!
I'm almost two, and I'm a collie mix, and I have lots of energy!

When I first got here to the Animal Protection Society, I was a little concerned, because I really wasn't sure what was going on. But now that I know that all the volunteers are really nice people, and they bring me food and toys and brush me and take me outside, I *really* like them! One of the volunteers even mentioned that when we come by my kennel, I do a little happy dance! And she's right - I do! (You should stop by - I might dance for you, too!)

And, I *always* have a huge smile on my face! I'm so sweet!

I really like toys, and other dogs are nice too (as long as they're polite, of course). I love time in the exercise pen, where I can walk around and sniff things and check everyone out. And anytime anyone wants to pet me, I'm totally fine with that. I have a really thick, gorgeous, soft coat, but I also have short legs, and it makes it hard for me to get to all the itchy spots - it's so much nicer if I have a nice, attentive human to brush me and scratch all those hard to reach places!!

Hi everyone! My name is Jake! Good news - I was adopted!

I'm two years old, and I'm an American Bulldog mix!

Sadly, my family had to give me up to the Animal Protection Society. I was really distressed to come here at first - I mean, it's noisy, and there are all these dogs trying to talk to each other, and it can be a bit much at first. But, I'm really trying hard here to show all the great volunteers what a wonderful guy I am. I sit up when they walk by, and wag my tail to show them that I'm sweet, and I like to lick hands (especially ones that have hot dog parts on them!), and I think everyone here knows now that I'm a big ol' softie.

So, I'm settling in here, although I'm still a bit anxious. The volunteers try really hard to show me not to be afraid - they give me food, and treats, which are great! And I get to go on walks, and play in the exercise pen too! I even know how to sit and lay down already!!

I love other dogs, as well as toys. When people bring toys and balls to my kennel, I do a little dance, because I get so excited! Chew-time is fun!

Hi all!

My name is Mitch! I was adopted!

I'm around two years old, and I'm a Labrador-Husky mix! That's the reason I have such neat eyes - they're mostly brown, with these big chunks of blue in them. So pretty!

Anyhow, I live here at the Animal Protection Society - for now, anyway, until I can find my very own forever home. (Hint, hint!) So, let me tell you about myself! I'm really sweet, and I love people. Cuddling is something I'm really good at, and if you'd like to brush me and pet me, I will fawn all over you.

I like toys, even though sometimes I'm not entirely sure what to do with them (I bet you can help me learn, though). I like to chase things, though, and give things an occasional chew. Hi everyone!

My name is Cookie, and I'm adopted!!!

And I'm as sweet as one, too. Maybe that's how I got my name!

I'm around two years old, and I'm an Elkhound mix! I have soft, gorgeous fur, and I adore it when you run your fingers through it - I stop whatever I'm doing and sit down so that you can get to all the particularly itchy spots, and then I give you one of my patented smiles!

I don't really know what to do with toys, so you might have to help me out there. But it's ok - I like to run, and walk with you, and give you all my attention. I also like other dogs, so if you already had a dog who's mellow and polite, I bet we'd get along really well. I like to sniff the dogs from behind the gate of the exercise pen, but I'm not sure how well I'd want to be pounced on by some little rambunctious thing!

Cherie! In Foster Care, but will be available for adoption!

Hi everyone!

I'm Cherie!

I look sad in my photos because I have a bit of a medical condition. It's called cherry eye, and it's how I got my name - Cherie! It's not a bad condition - meaning, it can be corrected pretty easily with some surgery. My third eyelids are a bit malformed, so they will puff out like this unless they get fixed.

They tried to fix me once already, and it worked nicely on one side, but the other didn't take so well, so they'll do it again sometime. No big deal - I'm tough! I can take it!

So, don't let my sad face throw you off. I am a really happy, sweet girl! I'm close to a year old, and I'm a pit bull mix, so that means that I'm cuddly, affectionate, gentle, and ready to play!

I'm in foster care right now, pending my new surgery, and when that's all done, I'll be able to be adopted! So hopefully, you're the type of person that can look past my cute outside and see my beautiful inside!

Hi! I'm Wally! The nice people at Wake SPCA took me in, but don't forget me - I still need a forever home!

I know I'm a bit silly-looking, but hey, that's not my fault! I'm still a sweetheart! I'm just sort of a hodge-podge kind of dog - part Basset Hound, part Labrador, and part something with a big, curly tail!

I'm around two or three years old, so I still have lots of puppy energy, but I can calm down pretty quickly too.

Hi everybody! My name is Fiona, and I was adopted!

Yup, Fiona, just like the princess in Shrek. I'm a pit bull princess!

I'm probably about two to three years old, and I'm really only a pit bull mix but that doesn't take away from my royal demeanor! I'm pretty small, so I'd be great in an apartment or townhouse, and best of all, I'm a lover!

My favorite time of day here at the Animal Protection Society is when the volunteers stop by to play with me, or take me for a walk. I really love cuddle time in the exercise pen, or being brushed, and I love meeting new people! My little rear end just wags itself right off!

I'm pretty polite, so as long as other dogs are polite in return, then I will be fine around them, but I probably don't need a canine playmate to be happy - just you! And treats! Mmmm!

Henry!! Great news - I was adopted!

Hello all! Henry's the name, and I've been adopted!!

I'm almost two years old, in everyone's best guess, and I'm a pit bull-pointer mix (or so they tell me!)

I've been here at the Animal Protection Society for a while now, and let me tell you - these people are great. They've been so kind to me! You see, I got here under special circumstances. I was what they call a cruelty case. My former humans didn't take very good care of me, because I was really thin when I arrived. But, true to my pit bull nature, I showed everyone what a great boy I was, even though I didn't feel very well! I didn't have much energy, but I had a lot of spunk, and so the folks here got me all clean and healthy, and look at me now!!

I always have a huge smile on my face, and I wag my tail so much that it looks like I will snap my entire body in half. I jump up and come to the door of my kennel every time someone walks by! I *looooooove* toys!!! I *loooooooove* treats!!! And I *adooooooore* cuddle time!! I am still learning about this whole leash-harness thing, but I can't wait for my daily walk every day!

I really need a home where people will finally dote on me and spoil me and make sure I'm never mistreated again! As long as you're willing to teach me right from wrong, get me lots of exercise and attention, and give me, oh, five, six, ten square meals a day (hey, a guy can hope, right??), I will be the BEST friend you could ever hope for!

And who could pass up my beautiful face full of freckles???

Hello, everyone! I was adopted!!!

My name is Blanca, and I'm a pit bull mix! I'm about three years old!

I got my name because I'm almost entirely white (I have some grey spots under my fur, especially on the back of my ears), except for my black nose and my beautiful dark brown eyes!

I'm an APS Gold Star Dog - that means I can go home with anyone because I'm such a good girl!!

Hi!! *Wag, wag*! My name is Rupert, and I went to Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue!!

I'm a Pekingese, in case you couldn't tell, and I'm about eighteen months old! Plenty of puppy left in this little guy!!

I'm *soooo* cute! At least, that's what everyone who visits me says! (Personally, I think I'm cuter than Kingston, the other Pekingese here at the APS, but shhh - that's just between you and me, ok?)

I used to be a bit frightened - wouldn't you, when every other dog in here is at least four times your size?? But now I know that nothing will eat me, and I really get along well with the other dogs!

And I *love* the volunteers! I love being petted and picked up and cuddled, and I love a nice warm lap, especially now when it's chilly outside! I like exploring the outdoors, though, so some walking is a must!

And toys? Oh yeah. I like toys. In fact, today, I made one of the volunteers laugh because of the way my squishy face plays with some of the bigger toys they have! Yep, I'm cute!

I'm a Rottweiler, and I'm a year old!

Don't let my size fool you. I might be a big boy, but I'm a big teddy bear! In fact, when I first got to the Animal Protection Society, I was really frightened. These other dogs might be a lot smaller than me, but they bark really loudly!! But once I settled in, I started figuring out the ropes, and I realized that this isn't a bad place to be after all! I mean, the people are nice, and they like to take me outside and let me play, and I really love the toys they give me!

A big boy like me will need a lot of exercise, and a lot of training, just to make sure I have good manners. But I'm already off to a good start! I love food, so I bet I would be easy to train. If you have experience with big dogs, I might just be the perfect dog for you!

Hi everyone! I'm Thea! I was adopted!

I'm three or four years old, and I'm a Chow-Collie mix! That means that I have a lot of really soft, luxurious black fur, with adorable dark brown eyes that will melt your heart (or so the volunteers tell me!)

I was very frightened when I first got to the Animal Protection Society a few weeks ago. I was a stray, and I was frightened, dirty, and hungry. But soon I realized that the volunteers were very kind and gentle, and once I got cleaned up and fed, I started to settle in a bit!

I like to play a bit, but am still learning what to do with toys and such. I don't mind other dogs too, as long as they've got good manners. But, really, all I want is a human to finally spoil me rotten with walks and treats and lots and lots of affection!

Hi everyone! My name is Betty, and I'm a beagle!! I'm in Foster Care, but you can still adopt me, you know!

I might be in my golden years, but that doesn't mean I'm elderly! Oh, no, I'm in my prime, that's what I say, and don't let anyone tell you differently! One look at me and you'll see I still have my spark!

I love, love, love to go on walks with you. I have a little spring in my step, and sometimes, I still step on my own ears in my excitement. I also have been told that I make very adorable snuffly noises when I walk, but I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or not. Harrumph!

I also adore treats. (Yes, I know, I'm a little pudgy, but it's very impolite to ask a lady about her weight, thank you very much.) If you show me a hot dog, I almost fall over myself trying to sit down fast enough to please you! But as soon as you say the word, it's back to walking, or playing, or cuddling, or whatever you have in mind!

Other dogs don't faze me. Hey, I've been around a while, I know the ropes. As long as they're polite, I'm polite. So, a sibling would be just fine with me, as long as they respect their elders!

Hello all. I'm Byron! I am adopted!

I'm about four years old, I think, and I'm a beagle mix. I'm so glad to be here at the Animal Protection Society! I'm not sure what happened to me before I got here, but when I got here, I wasn't in great shape. I was kind of thin and matted, and very shy. But once I started getting regular meals (and treats!!), and saw that the volunteers here were nice and would never hurt me, I started opening up - just a bit! I'm still pretty shy, so everyone here knows to be gentle and show me that everything's ok. I really appreciate that! I bet that with more kind handling and patience, I'd really come out of my shell!

I don't mind other dogs, which is nice, because if you already had a dog at your house, but wanted me to come live there too, that'd probably work out. What's really important, though, is that you have a nice warm lap for me and kind, gentle hands that will pet my head.

I'm an adult, probably around 4-5 years old, and I'm a mix of terrier and German Shepherd, or so they tell me. I don't really know what I am, but I do know I'm sweet and gentle!!

I also know that I love people a lot! Petting is good. Scratching is good. Cuddling is *really* good. As long as I'm with you, my day is complete. I'm a tiny little beagle/dachshund mix, and at 4+ years old, I'm definitely full-grown! Yup, I could definitely fit in your purse!

I was at the APS a while back, and I got adopted. Sadly, they figured out really soon that they were ala ... allre ... allerg ... I made them sneeze. I was really disappointed to come back to the shelter, but I remembered that everyone here was really nice to me and would take good care of me until another family could find me!

Anyhow, I get along really well with all sorts of people - big and small, old and young - and I love to play! When the volunteers take me out to the exercise pen to play with tennis balls or toys, my face just lights up!! Maybe that's why they named me Sunny!!

Hi everyone! My name is Milton! And I'm adopted!

I'm a Bearded Collie, in case you couldn't tell! I'm probably around 3-4 years old, although I'm not entirely sure. Somehow I got lost, because I came to the Animal Protection Society as a stray, and my fur was really in bad shape.

I'm so grateful to all the volunteers here for trying to groom me up a bit - and for all the food, toys, and play time!! I love people!!

I haven't quite gotten the routine down here at the APS yet, but I'm really trying hard to figure out all the rules! My favorite time of day is when the volunteers come to take me out for a walk, because inevitably someone will pat my head or scratch me behind my ears, and I will lean up against them.

The Animal Protection Society of Durham would like to let you all know that October is Adopt-a-Dog Month!!

What does this mean? Well, any dog adoption in the month of October will be only $95!! This includes a basic physical exam, vaccinations, spay/neuter, heartworm test, deworming and a microchip!!

Also, there's an adoption event this Saturday, October 4th, from 10 am till 3 pm!

Aren't I dashing, with my rakish black patch over one eye? I'm always dressed to the nines in my tuxedo-fur coat!

I'm about 18 months old, so I'm young enough to get away with lots of things, but old enough to know better! Hehehe!

Nah, I'm a pretty good girl, or at least that's what I'm told here at the Animal Protection Society. They say I'm social and sweet (and I totally agree!)

I'm an Australian Shepherd mix, which is why I'm so fuzzy and soft! I love to play - toys, balls, other dogs, humans, anything! It's so much fun to get out into the yard and walk with people, or to run around the exercise pen with someone! Boy, I wish I could do that all day long. Mardi's Big Day! Mardi went home!

Hi! I'm Mardi, and this is the story of My Big Day Out!!

Good News! I'm Adopted!

Today, I got to go to this place I'd never heard of before - it's called the Farmer's Market! My friend Barry got to go last week, and he looked so happy when he got back that I was thrilled to find out the nice lady was taking me today!

I've gone home with some of the other volunteers before, so I was an old pro at clambering up into the car. I like to ride in the front seat because I can see out the window!!

Once we got there, I was greeted by the other volunteers. We took to each other right away - they thought I was so pretty! Awwww!

I loved having a job to do! I showed off my pretty bandanna all morning, hoping some nice folks would think I was great enough to take home. I had a few people that said they'd like to come see me again at the APS, so I hope they do!

It was so much fun meeting other doggies! I love to play, but I was gentle there. I sniffed everyone politely, and gave everyone a kiss! I even met some big tall Greyhounds, and I couldn't quite lick their ears, so I licked their legs and the very tip of their noses! They loved that!

I also got petted by so many people! I love people! And I was really gentle with the younger kids who came around. They were all really nice to me, and knew not to hit or pinch me, so I gave them all kisses too!

I even got to sniff and kiss some babies (with supervision, of course!) - that was new to me, but apparently I did a great job!

Finally, though, it was time to go back to the shelter. I didn't mind, because it did get warm outside today, and besides, I got to get back in the car! I couldn't wait to tell everyone about my big day!

Barry's Big Day! Barry's Been Adopted!

Hi!

I'm Barry, and this is the story of my Big Day!

Good News - I'm Adopted!!

Last Saturday, a nice lady from the APS took me on a field trip! She came that morning and took me out of my kennel, and boy, was I surprised! I didn't know where I was going or what was going to happen, but I was excited! A day out of the shelter sounded like fun!

She said we were going to some place called "The Farmer's Market." I hoped she wasn't going to sell me at the market! When I got there, though, I was told I got to be the "spokesdog" for the APS. That sounded like an awfully important job, so I did my best to be good!

My job was to stand around with the other volunteers and help advertise the APS and the Coalition to Unchain Dogs. They sound like a pretty good group of folks to me - they go around Durham and help other doggies get fences so that they don't have to live on chains all the time.

In fact, I was found by some of the Coalition volunteers, and that's how I got to the APS in the first place! So, I was really happy that they chose me for this important job!

It was fun, and a lot of people and dogs were there. I was a really good boy- I kissed everyone who walked by. Babies, kids, parents, dogs - it didn't matter. I loved everyone! And everyone loved me too, I think, especially when I inspected their groceries to make sure everyone was eating healthily!

I got to hang out in the shade once it got super warm, though. I got lots of cool water to drink, and even got a water bottle to chew on. I probably shouldn't have done that, but it looked like fun!

This is me getting lots of love from the little ones! I like them a lot, even when they tug on my ears or tail. I understand they don't know what they're doing!

Here I am, Barry the Canine Ambassador! I hope that one of the nice people I saw that day will come to look for me at the shelter! I'd love to go home - and maybe back to the Farmer's Market someday!

But finally, it was time to get back in the car. Boy, I sure figured out this whole riding in the backseat thing!

Whee! I love it when the window is rolled down! What a smile!

Well, that's the story of my day. Won't you please come see me at the APS? I want to go home!!!

Hi everyone! I'm Miriam, and I'm Adopted!

I'm a Flat-Coat Retriever mix - that means I have the softest, silkiest black fur ever! And I love it when people stop by to stroke my soft head, or feel my fuzzy ears, or rub my belly. It feels soooo gooooood!

I'm only about a year old, but I'm very gentle. I love to play, but I'm easy-going, and very very good with other dogs! I try so hard to be nice to all the humans and dogs here so I can show everyone how wonderful I am - maybe that way, someone will take me home with them!

Hi folks! I'm Myra, and I've gone home!!

Don't call me small - I'm Petite, thank you very much. After all, I'm a Shepherd-Whippet mix! I'm only about a year old, but I won't get any bigger. And that's just fine with me! I mean, look at these legs! I could be a supermodel somewhere, I bet.

Boy, the Animal Protection Society is a big place! I know the people here are nice and everything, and they feed me and play with me and pet me and try to reassure me that the big barky things won't eat me, but I still get a little ... concerned ... at times. I mean, come on, some of these big barky things are LOUD! So, I'm just a bit insecure at the moment. But, once I figure out exactly what's going on (I'm still new here), I'll probably settle down a bit.

Still, it'd be best for me to go home with someone who can help me improve my confidence a bit. I bet I'd be a whiz at obedience class, as long as I felt safe with you (and had plenty of treats!!) - I already listen fairly well here!

Milo is Adopted!!

Hi everyone! (Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle!) My name is Milo! (Wiggle, wiggle!)

I've been Adopted!!!!

I'm cute!! What else could you possibly want to know about me?
Oh, alright. Well, I'm about three years old - still spunky, but not quite so puppy-crazy! And I'm a rat terrier! And I'm cute, cute, cute!!

I'm still getting used to being here at the Animal Protection Society - there's a lot of noise, and a lot of these dogs are bigger than me, so I can be a tad anxious sometimes. But most of the time, I do just fine! I like people, especially if they pick me up and hold me and pet my head or rub my belly. And I like to play with other dogs - dogs my size, that is!!

So, if you have room in your life for a lapdog that will help you watch television and eat your hot dogs, then I think you should come see me in Kennel 3. I'll be waiting! (Wiggle, wiggle!)

Gracie! She's at Carolina Boxer Rescue but still up for Adoption!

Hi everyone! I'm Gracie! I went to Carolina Boxer Rescue, but I'm still available for adoption! http://www.cbr.homestead.com/

I'm a Boxer (in case you couldn't tell!), and I'm about a year and a half old. My former human had to give me up, which made me very sad. But at least I got to come here to the Animal Protection Society!

Boy, are the people here nice! They feed me, and give me treats, and the nice volunteers take me outside to walk and potty and play! I even get toys!!

Once I figured out the ropes here, I really settled in. Don't get me wrong - I'd much rather go home with you! But if I have to be someplace else for a while, it might as well be here. I can be really affectionate and playful with the volunteers and other dogs here, which is a lot of fun. I love it when people stop by just to scratch my head or rub my belly. I can never get enough!

I love food, too, so I bet if you trained me, I'd listen really really well (if there were, say, a hot dog in your pocket)!

Hi folks! My name is Maxwell, and I went home!

People here at the Animal Protection Society tell me I'm gorgeous, and frankly, I'm inclined to agree! I have soft, shaggy fur, and I love it when people stroke my head or scratch behind my ears. I have deep, soulful eyes, but best of all, I have a winning smile!

I'm a boxer mix, and I'm probably around a year and a half old.

I love, love, love going on walks with the volunteers here, but my favorite time of day is when I get to play with my toys in the exercise pen! I love to chase balls or chew on squeaky bones!

I'm pretty food-motivated. You show me a hot dog, and I'll work my tail off for you! Want to go to obedience class? I'm there!

Buddy went home!!

Hi, I'm Buddy, and I'm adopted!

I'm unique! I think that means that there's no one quite like me, and I guess that's true! Can you see why I'm special? Yup, that's right! I have two different-colored eyes! How neat is that?

I must be mixed with husky or shepherd or Great Dane or something! But, I'm also part lab and hound, or so I'm told. Well, whatever I am, I'm grrreat!

I'm about three years old, I think. That means that I'm spunky but a bit more mature. So as long as I get plenty of exercise and chances to play with toys or even other dogs, which I love, I'm a pretty well-mannered guy!

My sister, Suzie, is here at the Animal Protection Society too! I wouldn't mind going home with her, but really, I just want a home where someone will love me and give me lots of attention! And treats! Don't forget the treats!

I'm the Volunteers' Pick of the Week, 8/16/08!

I'm probably about 3-4 years old, and I've already had some puppies, but I'm happy to relinquish that job! I was a good mommy, but I'm looking forward to some "me" time now with a human who'll love me and give me lots of belly rubs and head scratches!

I adore people, so as long as you're willing to share your couch during TV time and let me snuggle with you, we'll get along great! I also love other dogs, so I'd be a great addition to the family!

Hi, I'm Cecelia! I'm in Foster Care but still able to be Adopted!

I'm around four years old, or so I'm told, and I'm a pit bull mix! I don't know what I'm mixed with, but I'm full of love, that's for sure.

Don't I have the most beautiful brindle stripes?? I'm told I'm gorgeous, but since I'm modest, I will just say that I think I'm rather pretty.

I think my life wasn't so good before I got to the Animal Protection Society. I was pretty quiet and shy when I first got here, but now that I understand the ropes, I've really decided to let my personality shine! I love all the volunteers who come and take me outside, or give me food or toys. I'm always ready with a tail wag or a kiss on the hand, and I love to be petted! I really just want to be with you, wherever you are.

I *love* food! If you give me treats, I bet I'd learn anything you wanted me to learn really quickly!

Hi, I'm Janie, and I went Home!

I'm a pretty girl, aren't I? The nice people here at the Animal Protection Society think that I'm a mix, maybe with some Cattledog or Basenji because of my great pointy ears.

I'm around five years old, so I've had time to age gracefully, but that doesn't mean that I don't know how to have fun! I do like to play with younger male dogs, but not so much with females. Hey, when you're this pretty, you don't want competition!

Anyhow, I'm a really sweet dog. I love people, especially when they have treats, and I'm good with toys. I love love love getting petted - having your head scratched isn't something to pass up lightly!

I'm a Border Collie mix, which means I like to run, run, play, run, play, herd, run, and play! And I'm still just under a year old, so I have tons of energy!

I'd love to go to a nice home where there was a yard I could run around in, and maybe have another dog to play with! I get along really well with other dogs, so a brother or sister would be nice!

Hi, I'm Kenna! I'm Adopted!

I live in Kennel 16 at the Animal Protection Society, and boy am I glad to be here! I'm kind of young, only about 18 months old, and I don't know exactly whether I've had a great life so far, but I am really starting to like it here. They bring me food, and take me outside to go to the bathroom, and I get toys, too! And sometimes, if I'm lucky, I can play with other dogs! It's so exciting!

I'm a Boxer-Boston Terrier mix, so I have great big ears and a smooshy face, but I have the softest fur ever! I love it when people stop by and just pet me, scratching under my chin or on my cheeks!

I really have a good personality, I think. I'm pretty mild-mannered, and really responsive to people, but I do like to play! So, hopefully somebody who would like a dog like me will stop by and see me - could it be you?

Hi, I'm Penelope! I am at Independent Animal Rescue!

You can call me Penny if you want to, though! I don't mind!

I'm about a year and a half old, so I have tons of energy, but I really am a sweetheart! I'm a pointer mix - maybe I have some greyhound in me, because I'm long and lean and I like to run!

I love other dogs - well, I love to check them out, anyway, and give everyone a thorough sniffing. I like to play with toys, but I could use some help. Sometimes I'm not quite sure what to do! Will you teach me?

I know how to sit nicely for treats already, so I like to do that a lot just in case you have a biscuit in your pocket! (Do you? Will you bring me one? I'll sit for you!!)

Hi, I'm Faye! I've been adopted!

I'm a sweet, gentle 3 year old girl! I'm a mix, probably of Labrador and Pit bull, but I'm not entirely sure.

Don't you just love my sweet, kind face? My beautiful amber eyes match the spots on my coat, or so I'm told. They look like liquid toffee! I don't know what toffee is, but it sounds yummy! Can I try it?

The people at the APS are so nice! They bring me food and water, and toys, and we even get to go outside! But my favorite time of day is when someone comes by just to pet me. I love to have my soft ears scratched! I'm really quite good with other dogs too - I just love to watch them and see what they are doing, or go over to the fence for a quick kiss or sniff! I love love love to play!!!

Suzie went Home!!

Hi, I'm Suzie and I'm Adopted!

My brother, Buddy, and I were given up to the Animal Protection Society a few weeks ago. We're doing much better now! I love mealtime, so I've gotten my girlish figure back! Boy, people here are nice!

I'm a two or three year old lab/hound mix, just like Buddy, but unlike him, both my eyes are the same color. Buddy and I are really good pals, so it'd be nice to go home with him again, but I get along well with other dogs too. Honestly, I just want to go home! I'm really sweet and gentle, I love food and toys, and my favorite time of day is when I get belly rubs and hugs from the volunteers here.

Hi, I'm Isis, and I'm Adopted!

I'm simply gorgeous, dahling, aren't I? And so genteel! Even though I'm only one year old, I am already showing the world how smart I am, because I know how to sit, lay down, and shake paws.

I don't mind other dogs, really, but a beautiful Husky like me would rather have her beauty sleep. How else am I to maintain my girlish figure? I'd much rather spend time with my humans, preferably those that will groom me and give me the delicious food and attention that I deserve!
